Star Wars: The Last Jedi - SPOILERS

edited March 31 in TV & Movies

So I searched for one of these threads and didn't find it so here's mine.

I watched this last night and it was Ok. But it gave me soooo many questions that perhaps some of you know the answer to.

First off, I totally think this movie was this generations 'Return of the Jedi' because there are fucking animals and shit everywhere for comic relief. I found there was a little too much comic relief in the movie for my liking but whatever, no big deal.

There are so many animal scenes though. So many.

Next up, what are the rules on dead Jedi's showing up and stuff? Because not only does Yoda pop in for a hello, he apparently lightning blasts a fucking tree too. So now the dead can interact with the real world.

Could they before? I don't recall. Also, can a dead Jedi show up ONLY if there are other Jedi around to see them? Can they just watch Rey in the shower and not even show up at all with the green glow?

Did Luke Motherfucking Skywalker kill himself by Astral Projecting too hard?
Since when can they do that shit? Motherfucker is floating in the goddamn lotus, thinking real hard about doing stuff and then he's gone. Uhhh.. what?

Have they always been able to communicate with each other by just thinking about each other? I mean I know they 'sensed some shit with the force' a few times prior but now Rey and Kylo are sexting with the force and I'm pretty sure he could force finger her if he really wanted to.

So now if you need to destroy a fleet of star destroyers you can just jump to lightspeed while pointing at them? Well jesus titty fucking christ does this ever change our battle tactics, right? Now instead of armies we just need a few suicidal motherfuckers and some ships and we just kind of get near 'em.. ask for access and fire up the hyper jets and bickety bam.. the motherfucker is rubble!!

BB8 can drive everything now. Can R2? Droids are going to OP as fuuuuuck.

That's all I remember currently.

The whole battle on the salt planet was so bad ass visually that I give the entire movie a pass.

I loved that. Full disclosure, I was high out of my mind for that part.

Also explosions don't kill you if you're a main character and Leia can fly through space with the force. What a hokey scene.

  • Law212Law212 Centurion

I opened this and am not looking at any text. I have to say I have avoided spoilers this long for this movie and I hate that someone made a thread. (not really but you get what i mean)

I am waiting for my 3D copy to come in the mail when it is released so I can finnaly watch this.

Qui Gon's death was spoiled for me , Hans death was spoiled for me... I just need to block out spoilers a while longer!!!!!

  • DoosDoos Centurion

Well stay the hell outta this thread! I only had minor tiny things spoiled for the movie. It's on the scene, Law.. download that shit and get 'er done.

  • Law212Law212 Centurion

its on the scene? whats that? I wont download it i refuse to watch it in anything other than 3D for the first time.....

  • Law212Law212 Centurion

And I couldnt resist the thread. I tried.

  • DoosDoos Centurion

It's pirateable is what I'm saying but if you want it in 3d that's your prerogative obviously. I guess you'll have to wait to know that chewbacca gets a FURBALL!

  • Law212Law212 Centurion

Ya for a star wars movie I can wait. It comes out april 2nd ..... Though as many know 3D is all but dead in north america so I have to order a lot of movies from the UK.

  • I expected to be able to answer some of your questions, but nope. None of that made any sense to me either.

I'm sure there is an expanded universe explanation for all of it though.
  • DoosDoos Centurion

Yeah, Tim.. I'm sure there's some BULLSHIT out there tying together a lot of those loose, floppy, made up deus ex machina ends.

I don't really care.. it's Star Wars, it's basically an entertaining joke as far as the franchise goes. But it's fun to question.

  • SmoreninjaSmoreninja Centurion
The Leia scene was almost too obvious of a bait and switch. Still no clue why Chewie decided to not easy the Porg after cooking it. What a waste.

Granted I'm theorising out of my ass here but suicide light speed might be the impractical when the shields are up. It's a huge convenience that people head McGee decided to heroically sacrifice herself so she was there to make the last minute change in plans but a Droid could still do the same.

I hope the next star wars has a better writer.

The action was fun with the Luke vs. Kylo fight as my favorite.

I don't think Luke astral projected himself to death but rather be astral projected and then willed himself to death. If his mom can do it he can damn well will.

I was much more invested in Poe's squadron than Rose or Finn. That being said I'm happy that Rose did save Finn because maybe they can make him more of a character in the next movie. Rose was... There?

It has been a few months since I saw the movie so I'm sure I haven't mention a few things, good and bad.

The short of it is I did enjoy the movie but it doesn't digest well. Like fast food.
  • DoosDoos Centurion

Did Padme will herself to death? I've forgotten near everything about those prequels.

When Rose? saved Finn I was all 'You dumb bitch! You just doomed us all!'.. I wish Finn had said something similar. Ha.

  • I thought she died of a broken heart

Did that actually happen? Goddamn those movies are awful.

  • I think it did? I'm pretty sure.
  • SmoreninjaSmoreninja Centurion

Broken heart is a fancy way of saying she willed herself to death. Let me have my inaccurate exaggeration!

So, I went and looked around for some other reviews of this flick. Wow. People hate it super hard.

It's like they forgot about the prequels. Oh yeah, most of the people reviewing it are too young to have watched the prequels when they came out or watched them as children.

Funny. I'm too old to care now and they're in the perfect age to hate a film. So now the sequels will receive all the hate the prequels got from dudes my age.

    Hilarious.

  • Law212Law212 Centurion

I just watched it. I liked it a lot. Ill post more about it tomorrow.

  • Law212Law212 Centurion

    Luke was not used well.
The scenes on the casino planet were boring and unnecessary
WE didnt really get to know who snoke was or why he was worth being afraid of.
Rey and Kylo should have teamed up and in the next movie luke would have to take them on.

Or Luke should have been bad and in the next one Kylo and Rey need to take him on.

Leia should have died because we dont need to CG her for the next movie .
    I hated Rose.
Overall I enjoyed it, It didnt really feel like the stakes were high though. The movie should have been a bit more serious .

Luke should have actually gone to fight Kylo and the battle should have been epic.
I thought Luke would raise his X-wing out of the water and fly back and help attack from the air .

Snoke linking Rey and Kylo was really cool. I like that he thought Rey would turn and be a better apprentice than Kylo. Which she would.

It seems like they are playing it too safe with the main series. Like rogue one felt higher stakes and more serious and IMO better than episode 7 and 8.

  • Law212Law212 Centurion

I really liked the end, where you see the young slave boy who has force powers, sweeping , then looking up at the sky. That was a cool scene.

Like you, Law, I avoided everything about this movie until I watched it. The first post in this thread was my initial impression and it was tainted by no other opinions.

Having said that, I've seen some other reviews (I watched Kevin Smith talk about it for an hour and fucking 30 mins!) and I agree with what a lot of people are saying in regards to the story and use of characters which is mostly negative.

But the visuals were so good I enjoyed the movie anyway.

For me the mythical franchise of Star Wars died with the prequels so none of the story, characters, canon or any of that means much to me any more.

I have my quibbles with how they did certain things but they're almost all based on a tactical scale.

Like for example what are the military implications of the dead being able to interact with the living world? and how small does a ship have to be in order to hit lightspeed and blow up a star destroyer?

Is there a list of force powers and is it not taught to each student? Because you'd think Kylo would know about Astral Projection and suspect it's being used against him but they never give those answers because then they limit themselves.

Anyway, they're fine movies. But I didn't even go to the theatre for this one and I doubt I will for the next. Maybe Solo though. Donald Glover looks amazing as Lando.

  • Law212Law212 Centurion

This movie felt like the episode "33" from the batlestar galactica reboot series.
The cylons were chasing the last surviving humans and the humans would jump ahead, wait 33 minutes and the cylons would arrive on their butts , and the humans had to jump away again being safe for another 33 minutes.

    It was very similar.

Though I did enjoy the first order chasing down and slowly whittling away at the last of the rebels.

I did not like the code breaker sub plot. It was not necessary and it was mostly boring and silly.

While being chased, there should have been space battles between fighters. Poe should have spent a bunch of time defending the fleeing ships with his x wing from tie fighters and Fin and a group of commandos should have made their way to the first order ship and had a full on assault against storm troopers to make their way to disable the ship from inside. It should have been non stop battle on the ship and in space .

INtead, Poe was just some flea , jumping around inside the ship trying to get people to let him be a cool dude who doesnt play by the rules.

Rose should have been cut from the movie.

To many animals... What was this a message from PETA?

Snoke should have been more bad ass and Luke should have actually fought Kylo , take a hand off him for good measure and possibly get struck down by him.

Rey should have been trained a lot more by Luke like Luke being trained by Yoda.
Then they both should have taken on Kylo who well wouldnt die just yet because theres one more movie.

We got a glimpse of Luke's Xwing in the water. He should have raised it up and actually gone to be with his sister. That was a huge wasted opportunity. If youre going to have him die , make it a going out in a blaze of glory dead, not having a heart attack from jacking off on a rock too furiously.

It seems that with episodes 7 and 8 they had great ideas and they carried them a certain distance, but then dropped them in favour of playing it safe. Which was a big mistake .

As for lightspeed through some ships. I thought that was awesome. It looked and sounded fantastic.

I loved the battle with rey and Kylo Vs those guards in red. Though i thought they dropped the ball having her not join him.

Then in the last movie, Luke and Leigha could kill them , ending the jedi and sith for good.

There are lots of force powers. Though the jedi in these movies dont know them. Luke Didnt learn much other than to lift things, push things and communicate through the force. He can also force jump and accentuate his abilities as well as has the jedi mind trick.

Rey can do what? the basic make things move, she never uses speed or barely uses any accents to her abilities like jumping or anything. She does mind control once .

Kylo doesnt use lightning , He doesnt use anything really except force grab a few times.

There was really no force power use in this movie.

Unless you include that kid using it to grab his broom.

I cant say I dont like this movie though because I did like it, but its disappointing in many ways too.

The original trilogy is still far better. And i can even say rogue one is better than episodes 7 and 8.

  • Law212Law212 Centurion

As for can Jedi just die like that and go to the force. Well , I know everyone thinks Vader killed Obi wan, but no. Obi wan disappeared before he got hit with the saber. Luke did the same thing Obi Wan did.

Jedi dont just disappear when killed. As you can see from the prequels. When jedi die, their bodies hit the floor.

The droids can do tons of stuff, and im not surprised they can do nearly everything especially all these years later since the originals

The visual of Luke surrounded by AT ATs was incredible, they just didnt give him his bad ass moment that he needed.

Who knows when dead jedi can show up? because at the end of Return of the jedi, Luke sees yoda amd Obi wan and vader at the end ... were they just there for the party?

Rogue One was the first movie i think that had one ship ram another . Which was cool, so I gave a pass to the hyper jump into the first order ship.

as for episode 9... I dont think Kylo ren is a menacing enough bad guy to hold the movie up. And Rey is no Luke Skywalker.

  • Law212Law212 Centurion

Oh I forgot Phasma... Because shes barely in it.

She shows up fights fin for a minute and falls . She will be back for the last one though.

The problem with using characters this little is they feel shoe horned it. She should have had a much bigger part. again , if the rebels had an assault team infiltrate the ship she could have been leading the storm troopers in that battle. Again, wasted potential . That scene should have taken up the waste taht was the code breaker story line.

  • Law212Law212 Centurion

I can now understand why Mark Hamil has said that this Luke is not his Luke . This isnt how Luke would act . And I have to agree.

Han had a great part in episode 7. Luke was wasted IMO.... which is a shame.

The whole battle on the salt planet was so bad ass visually that I give the entire movie a pass.

I loved that. Full disclosure, I was high out of my mind for that part.

Having read most of the books of the original SWEU i'll try to shed some lights, although it may not accurately depict the idea of the producers but may explain where the ideas were generated from.

First off the animal stuff. Obviously those were added to appeal to younger generations of fans but it might also attempt to expand the concept of biomes and diversity of worlds fauna.

As an example, the homeworld of oligarchs gamblers might be a reference to a civilisation of slavers that appeared in The clone wars animated series. Although the horse-dogs-like creatures who helped Finn and Rose bare resemblance to the enslaved nation in the show (Ashoka's race). We can also clearly notice that those creatures have some form of intelligence when Rose and Finn frees them.

Then, about force wielders and death, they can be pretty much everywhere whenever they wish to since they become part of the energy that is the force. So yeah, Yoda could perv out and watch Rey in the shower without her knowing it. For example, in RotJ, we get to see Obi-wan, Yoda, and Anakin even though none of them died there (one could argue that Anakin did, but in fact he died on the death star, not on the moon). And they can appear to annyone whether they're force sensitive or not.

This also explains why Yoda could manipulate lightning to hit the tree and hit Luke with his cane. Few characters managed to master this aspect of the force but some like Yoda and Exar Khun (the first sith ever) did. It takes a high level of force mastery but it's not impossible.

The ability to communicate like Kylo and Rey did is also possible, but once again it needs high mastery and/or being very attuned to the force to be achieved. In the books Luke gets contacted on many occasions in similar ways, although he never quite had that close discussions with counterparts. In his case it was more like the force itself telling/showing him that part of the power. In instance, in ESB, Vader kinda talks to him after falling down the chasm of Cloud city (while he's on the medical frigate at the end of the movie). A few scenes earlier, when he's dangling from the rebars/antennae (or whatever those bars are) after getting his arm cut, Luke contact Leia on the Falcon, even though she's some distance away.

Leia being able to survive to coldness of space when she gets ejected from the ship could be kinda explained by her creating some kind of protected field from the force itself (to keep her body warmth from droping) to prevent her from becoming a human popcicle. In the clone wars series we see Plo Koon survive the emptiness of space by using the force, although he does have a breathing mask.

As for the way the rebels destroyed the fleet, theorically if the starcruiser jumped into hyperspace close enough to it, it could rip the fleet apart, but not without sacrificing itself in the process. Don't forget that hyperspace jump is just a term to say that the said ship travels through space at lightspeed (or faster), it doesn't teleport it meaning the ship could hit any obstacle in its way.

And as for droids piloting ships, not all but most droids could pilot any vehicule. Further more droids like BB8 and Artoo are astromechs which are basically copilots. And if a droid like, let's say C-3p0 were to pilot a vehicule he probably could but most likely not as easily as Artoo could.

Lastly, although you didn't mention it, Luke's ability to hide from the force might be explained as a variant of what the Yuzhan Vongs did in the books. That civilisation, in the books, was invisible to the force but it wasn't quite an ability. For that race it was part of what those creatures were as a whole and represented another aspect of what the force really is. In the movie, Luke seems to have developped that ability to hide from Snoke, Kylo, and pretty much everybody else.

With that said i hope it did answer some of your questions about the movie and if you wonder anything else, don't be shy to ask.

  • Law212Law212 Centurion

Well contrary to lots of movies and shows , she wouldn't freeze in the amount of time she was out there. ANd she wouldn't explode. With her force powers what she did is very possible.

  • Law212Law212 Centurion

The more i think of this movie, the more it hurts. I really liked a lot of things about it, but they dropped the ball in too many key areas. I do really like it though. I like it enough I bought the regular 4K, the 4K steelbook and the 3D version will be coming next month

  • DoosDoos Centurion

Hey Ganner, nice to see you again.

I get that 'in the books' has an explanation for everything but unless there is a direct line of dialogue or a mention of 'x' in the movies, it's not canon to me.

Also, in mention of the BSG episode @Law, that's a great episode. It's tense as hell.

This was not a great use of that mechanic. The 'We're just outside of their range!' was boring.

  • Law212Law212 Centurion

Yeah it wasnt as effective, and there was no sense of loss when another ship would get taken out and the pilot would say their last words....

Again, they should have been sending tie fighters out as well and the rebels would have had to send their few pilots out to fight them.

They just didnt follow through on their good ideas.

And I agree, the books explanations dont matter , they need to have been established in the movies. Though I havent watched any of the deleted scenes. Sometimes those have cut dialogue that explain things.
