PlayStation Vita
  • I think Nintendo also is viewed as a family friendly name by many parents out there. I work in a hotel/convention centre and I always see kids with DS', rarely do I see any with PSP's.
  • well its cheaper, which helps it be more family friendly too.
  • I became worried that something was wrong with my Vita just a moment ago, but it turns out it was nothing. What I thought the 'problem' was ended up being true, as opposed to it being a glitch.

I've let the battery completely run out twice. The first time, I put it away and then charged/played the next day without any issues. But, tonight, I tried plugging it in right away to turn off Unit 13. But, it wouldn't turn on and the orange light was blinking. Since it didn't do that the first time (to my recollection,) I thought it might be an issue. Or that it needed to charge a bit before being turned on, which seems to be the case.

Since it's 6am, I just unplugged it and put it away for the night. Will charge tomorrow, although I don't like leaving the game in sleep mode like that. I wish it would just quit out.
  • So how's everyone's PlayStation Vita's working out? Are you all still using them or are they collecting dust?
  • I'm playing God of War: Chains of Olympus on it. I don't play my Vita as much as I'd like to, since there's no games that I want for it yet.
  • Mine has received quite a bit of use. The same thing can't be said about my PSP, so there's a noticeable upgrade.

Of course, I've been reviewing titles for it. Still need to pick-up Uncharted for sure. Maybe Hot Shots and Katamari once they're cheaper.

Yeah but you also been using it quite a bit to review games. So, aside those reviewed games, how often did you use it for gaming pleasure only?

  • I use mine almost every day. Whenever I'm out I take it, I always load it up at night and its the last thing I play before I go to bed. Its very easy to wind down to it.

    Sexual reference not intended.

I mainly play it when I'm working on reviews, but have played for pleasure a bit as well.

Since I have OCD and don't take portable systems out of the house, that cuts down on the amount of time I use them.
  • I tried one on Monday, it felt weird and disturbing light. The games looked gorgeous, the UI is fucking ugly compared to the PSP/PS3 and hate how much touch screen is required

You have to buy it off of the PlayStation Store, correct? How much does it go for?

    Sweet.
  • So, I was checking out the camera quality (which sucks), and I was recording a video, then the video stopped and started saving by itself and wouldn't end. So, I tried to turn it off, and now the PS button is flashing and the screen is black... I suppose I'll wait for the battery to die then see what happens.

And, Chains of Olympus is still $20.
  • Nevermind, I just had to hold the power button for 15 seconds or so to restart it.
  • Hi all,

So if I do get a PlayStation Vita, would you recommend anything other than, of course, the core system and also the Starter Kit?

Also, if I'm in the middle of a game of, say God of War and I hit my subway stop and need to exit quickly, can the unit quickly go into a suspend mode letting me pick up exactly where I left off without properly saving?

Lastly, what account security options are available? By that I mean if I drop my Vita on the subway without realizing it and someone else takes it, can they power on and access my PSN account just like that with all my info, or are there passwords and such that can be set up?

    Thanks.
  • You can quickly switch a Vita into power saving mode by tapping the power button, and you can set up a password that it asks for every time you try and power it on/wake it from sleep mode.
  • I actually might get one of these after the first price drop, since I do play my psp and ended up trading in my DS a while ago. Although to be honest I'm not interested in any of the games out for it at the moment, so probably going to wait until that happens first.
  • Hi all,

Picked up a PlayStation Vita, the Starter Kit, and Mortal Kombat last night.

Haven't gotten to spend too much time with it yet (maybe 30 minutes after charging it) and I'm running around a lot today, so perhaps some of you can save me a bit of time later by answering a few questions I have now :).

    - I placed the protective film on however there's four "air bubbles" (for lack of a better term) that resulted. Anyway to smoothen them out without removing the screen protector?

    - Any way to rearrange the icons on the Home Screen or remove some entirely?

    - Any way to turn off Bluetooth entirely?

    - Any way to disable auto sign in of my PSN account?

    - Are there Status options on PlayStation Network, such as Away and Busy?

    - Anyway to mute/block/report other members (anticipating the screaming idiots in Multiplayer)?

I'll add more questions if I think of any, and @LegendofMyth, I'll add you once I get a better feel for the device and we'll play some Multi.

My initial impressions of the Vita are positive; very slick looking and a gorgeous display. I did get stuck in the Update loop when first trying to link to my PSN account, but a quick online search revealed that was a known issue with an easy work around.

I also want to tinker with the camera more to see it's quality. Haven't tried AR yet.

I am a bit disappointed with the lack of printed documentation, but that's internet reliance for you.

    Thanks!
  • im debating whether or not i should pick one of these up in a few weeks to a month cause i know im going to be working Allot over the next month and a bit atleast so i'll have some cash to spare...

  • Alright...let me answer as many as I can for you (off the top of my head)

    - I placed the protective film on however there's four "air bubbles" (for lack of a better term) that resulted. Anyway to smoothen them out without removing the screen protector?

Yes...you can use the edge of a surface (make sure it isn't sharp or overly hard) to lightly push the bubbles out. Wallets, magazine spines...things like that. Most packs of screen protectors actually come with a little piece of cardboard with a plastic tip that works wonders.

    - Any way to rearrange the icons on the Home Screen or remove some entirely?

Yes. You need to press your finger down on an icon (any icon in the home screen) for a few seconds. The game will then switch over into edit mode. In this mode, you can delete icons, move them, create new pages and insert your own backgrounds.

    - Any way to turn off Bluetooth entirely?

Yes. Head into Settings, Network, Bluetooth Settings and UN CLICK the Bluetooth Feature box.

    - Any way to disable auto sign in of my PSN account?

You can on the PS3....I don't know about Vita. I'm going to say no, because only one profile may be active on a Vita system, so there really is no need to sign out. Also, why wouldn't you want auto sign in?

    - Are there Status options on PlayStation Network, such as Away and Busy?

I...don't know? Ive never actually looked.

    - Anyway to mute/block/report other members (anticipating the screaming idiots in Multiplayer)?

Yes. Most are game specific (like the 360) and can be handled directly in the game...the PS3/Vita also has a ignored/blocked list.

Let me know if you have anymore questions.
  • Quick question Myth or anyone. If i plan on using the vita exclusively for gaming, no social media crap, no apps, etc, do i need more than 4gb of memory? Saw the Starter kit that comes with a 4gb card, was thinking about grabbing that as well. The other memory cards(16 and 32) are an arm and a leg, so i dont want to buy one if i dont have to.
    Post edited by Ninja_Starz at 2012-05-12 15:58:17
  • ^ If you don't plan on downloading games from the PS Store, then 4GB will be fine.

  • @whorr
Thanx for the heads up. Totally forgot about that. I do plan on DLing a lot of the games i used to own on psp like Powerstone collection, Metal Slug anthology and SF3 Max.
Another question: Google wasnt clear, but i read u can move PSP games back and forth from ur PS Vita memory card to ur PS3 harddrive. If so, coudlnt i stick with the 4g, and just move the odd psp game over when i feel like? Maybe i should just go with a 16g. Actually, i should check the prices of these psp games before doing anything. Not worth paying more than like 15 bucks for each imo and if they are more, well screw buying them.

    Hi Legend,

    Thanks!

    - For the protective film, I took my Vita out of the soft case about an hour ago, and three of the four air bubbles had magically vanished :p.

    - I completely missed the Bluetooth option when poking around Settings last night. I'll take another look.

    - For autosign in, a few of my friends will want to play MK, and I'd prefer they not do so on my account. I'm guessing then that I'll have no choice, correct?
  • Get the trigger grips as an accessory. If you got big hands like me then it is an awesome accessory. Downside is that none of the cases fit the trigger grips but its been a god send for me for some of the games.

So far I haven't had issues using the "L" or "R" buttons, the only thing I've found is that in Mortal Kombat it doesn't always perform an enhanced special when I do one (which used "R").
  • I'm assuming like any other modern day device, I can play on my Vita while it's plugged into an AC outlet, correct?

Also, is there anyway to check the contents of my Memory Unit from the Vita itself? I couldn't find anything under settings (save to Format it), and I haven't installed the management software to do back ups on my PC yet.

I'm also assuming I did _not_ need to format the memory unit from my Starter Kit, as I didn't and everything appears to be working.
  • @Jux feel free to add me...I am VanishedNine on PSN

  • Woo hoo!!! Just traded in my 3DS (boxless), with changer stand, and 7 3ds games for a brand new PS vita with BlazBlue (brand new) and MvC, Rayman, and Uncharted (all used) for 200$. Man, the screen is almost as big as the entire 3ds!! Going to walk down to FS later to grab a starter kit which they didnt have.

Not to do with the buttons per se, but if you play a game that uses the back touch pad I find it prevents you from hitting that needlessly. To each their own.

Ah, I see. Mortal Kombat doesn't support the rear touchpad, so I haven't had an issue with that yet.
  • I was at costco earlier today and they have a bundle with the vita and a 8gb card a golf game and a case for 299 is that a good deal? if i were to pick it up like is 8gb fine? or will i need a larger card? cause if i need a larger card i'll just pick up the vita then purchase a card and a game.

ohh and a quick question if i don't have a ps3 will it effect the vita? like make it less un-enjoyable cause i know there are some exclusive features.

Well, a Vita regularly costs $249.99 and I also got the starter kit (4GB card, headphones, soft case, cleaning cloth, screen protector, card organizer) for $39.99. Mortal Kombat was $39.99. So yeah, I'd say you found a good deal!

I would expect an 8GB card will do you just fine unless you plan on putting lots of music and such on the Vita.

    I also don't have a PlayStation 3.

  • Hi all,

Okay, I finally finished reading the PlayStation Vita User's Guide, and it's certainly answered some of my questions.

Some things I need to try:

    - Content Manager. I need to install this to my PC this weekend and see if it let's me see exactly what's on my Memory Card.

    - Location Data. Has anyone tinkered with Near yet? What are your thoughts? I'm extremely reluctant to have the device, and more specifically Sony, tracking my whereabouts lest they send assassin's after me for going to another Xbox party.

I have some additional questions that weren't answered in the manual:

    - I'm assuming "Blocking" a player stops voice communication as well, correct?

    - If I enter Edit Mode on the Home Screen and delete an application, it's apparently gone and all the data with it. So if I delete something, say, like Remote Play, a default app that I have no use for, is it gone forever or can it be brought back via "Restore the PS Vita System" under Settings? I don't plan to delete any default apps, mind you, I'm just curious.

    - When I first turn on my Vita, it immediately goes to the second Home page and loads up the Mortal Kombat icon. Is there anyway to prevent it from jumping to the second page so it properly starts on the first page?

    - @LegendofMyth Saw you have Scorpion as your Avatar. Did you do that via your PS3?

    - Is there anywhere online I can edit my PSN Account info so I don't need to type out a bio via the touchscreen keyboard?

    Thanks!
  • @Jux if you go to playstation.com you can edit some of your settings there...just not really sure as i don't log in there often.
  • Yes, I did it via my PS3. Came with the CE of Mortal Kombat on PS3.
  • Cool, thanks guys.
  • @Jux if you go to playstation.com you can edit some of your settings there...just not really sure as i don't log in there often.

Checked playstation.com, but no luck. It's funny, it shows my Trophy progress but says I have no trophies and seems to only want to look for PlayStation 3 titles. Under Account Settings it also doesn't show a Vita but does show my old PlayStation Portable which I sold back in Dec. 2008. Can't see an option to remove it from there either.

Logging in to the Sony Entertainment Network brings up the account settings I set up via my Vita and recognizes that handheld, but not bio options.
  • Been really enjoying the PS Vita so far. Not to keep bashing the 3ds, but this thing blows it out the water. The 3d graphics on the 3ds look like n64 games compared to the non 3d Vita graphics.

Just go onto the ps stpore and check some of the games, prices and how much memory it requires. I got the 4gig with the starter pack, and have so far DLed these psp/ps mini/vita games. The memory is approx.
    PSP games:
    SFA 3 (199mbs)
    Powerstone collection (304mbs)
    Metal Slug Anthology (705mbs)
    Crush (600mbs)
    Worms (87mb)
    Bomberman Legacy (59mbs)

    PS minis:
    Mini Squadron (27mbs)
    Artic Adventures (21mbs)

    PS Vita:
    Escape Plan (840mbs)

If u plan on DLing Vita games as opposed to buying the game card, u will need more memory. Most Vita games i saw were over a gig easy.

  • Hi all,

Is there anyway to properly test the calibration on the thumb sticks? A buddy of mine tried my Vita today and he uses the left stick to play Mortal Kombat. The stick was horribly imprecise, way too sensitive, on the Player Select screen. I've always used the D-Pad myself so I never noticed before.

I don't know anyone else who owns a Vita, so I can't try Mortal Kombat on another unit. I suppose I could by another game to test the stick out, but I'm hoping not to.
