Well, familiarize yourself with the Standard Rotationand don't buy any of the packs from the 2016 Expansions unless you plan to play in Wild frequently.
Wild is where all cards from all the expansions are allowed.
Standard is where you play the most recent expansions and is where most of the competitive play happens.
For you, what I would recommend before spending any money is to play in Arena. It is the fastest way to farm gold and familiarize yourself with the majority of cards from both standard and wild.
You will see all the craziest shit and you can break even at around 4 wins. Once you can average 7 wins (out of a maximum of 12) you are called an 'infinite' player because the rewards will usually pay for another arena run and then some.
Also, spend some time playing in Dungeon Run, another fun single player mode that gets pretty nuts. You'll learn a lot.
There's always going to be time to spend real money, I seriously suggest you improve enough that you have a good idea what you want out of the game and where you should put your money to get the best results.
@EGS Yeah, Trump is pretty good and his videos are some of the best out there for learning the strengths and weaknesses of the classes.
If you're looking for some next level shit, you can watch Firebat's videos on Youtube or check him out on Twitch.
He's not like, world champ level these days but he is very, very good. He was the first ever Hearthstone World Champ years ago and now just makes a living streaming and casting events.
He's my favorite because he doesn't get salty, he talks through a lot of his plays and he tries out weird shit. His YouTube channel editor is also fucking hilarious.. easily one of the best in the biz.
Yeah I play Hearthstone near nightly.. Whatcha looking for EGS? It's hard starting as free to play.
Best advice I can give is to try to re-roll your quests every day and try to get something worth at least 50g. Do the quest.. if you're looking to farm a collection.. arena is the way to go once it's unlocked... but arena ain't easy either. There's an app you can get that helps with the draft, Overwolf, it'll rate the cards based on user stats of other people using the app. That helps with your overall deck but.. y'know.. shit ain't easy.
There was a player named Trump (before Trump was the prez) and he used to have all these 'Beginner' videos on youtube, probably a bit outdated now but still worth a watch for things like favorable trading and knowing when to push face and such.
